Information for Participants

Los Angeles County Probation Department's Electronic Monitoring Program may allow you an opportunity to serve all or part of your sentence on an electronic monitoring device instead of in jail.  While on Electronic Monitoring you will typically be allowed to continue working or continue your education.

Court Referred
  • Pretrial:  For certain eligible offenses, you may spend your time awaiting your trial on Electronic Monitoring.

  • Post Sentencing:  As part of your sentencing you may be ordered by the court to be on Electronic Monitoring instead of serving your time in jail.

Jail Participants

If you are already in jail or have a surrender date to go to jail, you may apply to serving your sentence on Electronic Monitoring instead of serving it in jail.

How to apply for the program
  • If you are in court facing a jail sentence, you may petition the court through your attorney to be referred to Electronic Monitoring.

  • If you are in jail you may call EM at (213) 893-5369 to submit an EM application (over the phone).

  • If you have a future date to surrender to county jail, you may call EM at (213) 893-5369 approximately one week prior to the surrender date to submit an EM application (over the phone).

For more information about the jail referral process see Referral.

What to expect once in the program

Participating in the EM Program involves:

  • You will be wearing a GPS device which tracks your movements or wearing a device tracking if you are at home or not.

  • You are allowed to leave home only for approved activities during pre-approved times.

  • You may also be assigned a breath alcohol device and be required to test several times per day.

  • You will have meetings with a CorrectiveSolutions' case manager on a regular basis, up to once a week.

  • You may also be ordered drug or alcohol testing.

While on the program you are required to be at home but are typically allowed to go to work and to attend school or medical treatment with prior authorization.

You are monitored 24 hours a day and any violations of your conditions will be reported to the Court or to the Sheriff via Probation's EM staff.
